Become Familiar With Golf Courses To Learn The Game Faster

Golf is an outdoor game played on vast grounds called golf course. The golf course is provided with nine or eighteen holes. The players make use of many kinds of clubs called woods, irons and putters to hit the balls. The golf course is named in different ways according to the position of the holes.

The teeing ground is a part of the golf course at the start of a hole from where the player hits the first stroke and may be made of short cut grass to prevent any interference with the ball's lie. This section is referred as "Tee" or "Tee box". The teeing ground is bordered by a pair of tee markers. When the player stands in the teeing ground facing the hole, the outer edges of the tee markers denote the left, right and front side of the tee. The depth of the teeing ground is about two club lengths. The golf course has six or more sets of tee markers which are color coded to differentiate the distances from the hole.

- Blue or black colored tee markers always demote the longest yardage from the hole and generally used by professional male players with low handicap in championship tournaments.

- White tee markers are used by male golfers who are given middle or high handicap. The white tee exists in the middle of championship and ladies tee.

- Yellow or red colored tee markers are used for championships when they are situated behind the white tees and used by women to hit when they are situated in front of white tee. The latter tee markers provide the shortest yardage.

- Green colored tee markers are used by juniors and fresh golfers to hit from and have lesser yardage than the red tee markers.

The fairway is a part of the golf course lying between the teeing ground and the putting green near the hole. The surface grass on the fairway is cut short and exists as a vantage point to hit from. The rough is a portion of the golf course that exists between the fairway and the putting green with high cut grass creating difficulties in hitting the ball resting in this zone.

The professional golfer is normally able to drive the ball off the first shot at the tee box directly on to the putting green having Par three holes. Holes which are located at longer yardage than Par three holes, allow the player to play one more shot from the fairway or rough. The golf course sometimes has a bent path which makes the hole out of sight from the position of the tee box. If the path bends to the left, it is called a "dogleg left" and to the right "dogleg right". If the path bends both left and right, it is called "double dogleg".

Hazards are places on the path of the golf course having stagnant water, growth of dense bushes and sand traps. While playing from these troublesome locations, the player is expected not to touch the surface of the ground or water with his club before hitting the ball.

Putting green is the green grassed portion nearer to the hole. The ball resting on this area is pushed by the putter so as not to leave the ground before entering the hole. The cup size measures 108 mm in diameter and 10 cm in depth. The position of the cup is changed frequently by the greens keeper to minimize wear and tear of the grass surface.
