i know of a hidden treasure at the bottom of a small pond but have no experience in diving. my best estimate is at its deepest point it wouldnt be any deeper then 20-30 ft. i dont think just jumping in and trying to swim to the bottom of the pond would be effective at all. I have thought about maybe getting some snorkling gear and trying to go at it like that but what do you think?????
20-30 ft (6-10 m) is within easy skindiving range of anyone who knows the correct techniques and is willing to practice a little.
However, skindiving does not give you very long to search per dive, and a systematic search would be much easier to conduct on SCUBA, especially if you don't know the exact location of the treasure (how small is this 'small pond'?), or if the water clarity is poor.
Even if you manage to locate the treasure, salvaging the goodies will also take much longer using snorkelling gear than it would with SCUBA, since you will not be able to bring up as much at a time. As divers, we are advised to use a lifting bag (inflated by compressed air from our tank) to lift anything heavier than ~4 kg (8-9 lb), for safety reasons. It's not practical to carry/operate lifting bags/gear as a skindiver, even if you can acquire it (for liability reasons, professional dive stores are unlikely to sell air tanks and regulators to a non-diver).
Finally on an unrelated note--do you actually have salvage rights for this pond? If you are not the owner, then you should find out who is, because they may have a better claim on anything you bring up, even if you were the one who went to all the trouble to do so.

For #2, why not you discovering a treasure chest, a new fish, or an unexploded missile?
For #1. . . draw a dressing room, the backstage area, or what the seats look like from the stage, looking over the footlights.
cant go wrong with a gift certificate for his favorite sporting goods store, either that, or ask his friends what he needs for his new hobby.
