Why a ship would submerge more in fresh water than in sea water?
I thought that due to the lower density of the fresh water, the buoyant force would be smaller, so the weight of water displaced would be lesser..
Okay, this is all about density, adding salt to water makes the water more dense because it dissolves and so displaces very little/no water but the ions it forms (Na+ and Cl-) are much heavier than water molecules you can see this from their molecular mass. This makes the water on average denser with 35.9 g/100 ml (25 °C) since 100ml of pure water weighs 100g, we have a 35.9% increase in density from 1g.cm^-3 to 1.359g.cm-3.
This brings us to the next point, okay but why does density have an effect? Well, the closer the density of the two objects more "weightless" the object will appear and the more it will float. Here is the equation showing this:
effective mass= actual mass (1-[density of fluid/density of object])
as the densities become similar the effective mass gets closer and closer to zero.
