Can I scuba dive if I have ear problems?
I am thinking about learning to scuba dive but I have read the medical statement and I answered yes to a few of them. I am going to my doctors to see if I can dive but I was wondering if anyone else has these problems and whether they can dive or know if it is safe to do so?
I have had ear surgery to enlargen my ear canals as they are very narrow because as a child I had glue ear. I also constantly have ear problems by the fact they always feel blocked because of the air pressure in my ears. I also get painful ears when I swim underwater in a swimming pool but I don't know if it's different to diving because I wouldn't be holding my breath. I also suffer from M.E and although I am getting better I still cannot do any strenuous exercise and I don't know how difficult scuba diving is. Serious answers please, thanks for any help!
I spoke to the woman who organises the diving but she didn't really know and told me to speak to a doctor.

Wearing ear plugs won't help you equalize. If anything it can actually be dangerous.
The most common way is using the valsalva method ( pinching your nose and gently blowing before you feel discomfort). Other methods include yawning or moving your lower jaw from side to side or swallowing.
I suspect your problems equalizing boil down to the fact that you're not doing it early enough. Once your tubes shut, it's too late and you'll need to come up a bit for them to open and try again.
