Longtime Morcheeba fans that found their sunshine bright album The Antidote a complete disappointment couldn't ask for a better follow-up than Dive Deep. Making that other unloved effort seem like a mislabeled side project, Dive Deep finds multi-instrumentalists the Godfrey brothers returning to the murky, moody kind of downtempo and trip-hop of their early days, just without original vocalist Skye Edwards, or for that matter, Antidote's vocalist Daisy Martey. Instead, they go about it Zero 7 style, utilizing a series of guest vocalists including smooth rapper Cool Calm Pete, alternative singer/songwriter Thomas Dybdahl, and most surprisingly, pop/rock veteran Judie Tzuke, who brings a welcome, folk-tinged sound that serves to connect the dots here between soft rock and Portishead. Tzuke's "Enjoy the Ride" and "Blue Chair" are the mellow highlights to curl up with, while Dybdahl's trilogy of songs -- "Riverbed," "Sleep on It Tonight," and "Washed Away" -- finds his poetic musings on all things melancholy perfectly packaged in Morcheeba's lazy sway. Special mention goes to newcomer Bradley Burgess who delivers "Run Honey Run" with all the hippie grace this John Martyn cover deserves. If Burt Bacharach and the bedazzling side of '60s rock influenced The Antidote, Martyn, Bert Jansch, and Fred Neil are the more earthy and literate artists brought to mind by Dive Deep. The change does the Godfrey brother's music good, bringing it more in line with the Morcheeba name and the masterful good songs/good vibes combination that made their first two full-lengths so haunting. ~ David Jeffries, Rovi Performers: Ross Godfrey - Piano (Thumb), Pianette, Analogue Synthesizer, Clavioline, Charango, Wurlitzer, Lap Steel Guitar, Fender Rhodes, Clavinet, Banjo, Organ (Hammond), Synthesizer, Guitar (Acoustic), Guitar, Guitar (Electric), Bass, Keyboards; Judie Tzuke - Vocals; Paul Godfrey - Noise, Scratching, Drums; Thomas Dybdahl - Piano, Vocals, Bass, Guitar (Acoustic), Guitar
Tyrone Power made his last screen appearance before a three-year stretch in the Marines in this World War II drama. Lt. Ward Stewart (Tyrone Power) has served with distinction as the commander of a PT boat, so his uncle, Adm. Bob Stewart (Minor Watson), gives him a new and more challenging assignment aboard a submarine. Before shipping out, Ward enjoys a night on the town, where he meets and romances a pretty schoolteacher, Jean Hewlett (Anne Baxter). However, when Ward reports for duty, he discovers he'll be serving under Lt. Cmdr. Dewey Connors (Dana Andrews), who happens to be Jean's boyfriend. On leave and on land, Ward and Dewey are soon caught up in a romantic rivalry, while on duty and under the water they must work together to ferret out Nazi U-boats. Crash Dive received an Academy Award nomination for the special effects work in the film's battle sequences. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

After the end of Slobberbone, singer and lead songwriter Brent Best performed some solo shows and started working on solo material. Despite his last group having disbanded, Best brought his old pals Jess Barr and Tony Harper back into the fold for his new group, the Drams and added a new bassist and keyboardist. And while fans of Slobberbone might yearn for the band to reunite at some point, there is plenty of material here to keep them pleasantly happy. The addition of keyboards and less reliance on guitars makes songs like "Truth Lies Low" open up and fly from start to finish. Think of a polished Wilco without the bizarre but brilliant tangents, and you get the gist of what's going on with Jubilee Dive. From there the group saunters into a roots rock milieu, with "Hummalong" hinting at summery California pop in the distance before the guitars take over in the vein of Blue Rodeo circa Lost Together. Best is at his best, though, with the tender, slower, and mellower Southern moments during "Holy Moses" that features some great work by keyboardist Chad Stockslager. It sounds like a cross between Black Crowes and Canadian artist Matt Mays, while "Fireflies" has a certain '60s rock flavor to it with its rather simple melody. A couple of the songs venture into six-minute territory, including the soft, bubbly pop of "You Won't Forget" that morphs into a haunting, string-laced middle portion before returning to square one and ending with a myriad of horns, guitars, and harmonies. Another highlight is the dark and depressing dirge-like slice of Americana entitled "When You're Tired," while "Shortsighted" has a bit of Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone" embedded within as Best briefly sings about the trials of being in a band. The lone ordinary songs are "Unhinged" and a formulaic "Crudely Drawn." But a real highlight is the fantastic and well-crafted "Make a Book" that toes the line between pop and rock perfectly. Closing with the lovable and bittersweet epic "Wondrous Life," the Drams have made a damn good debut. ~ Jason MacNeil, Rovi Performers: Brent Best - Vocals, Guitar; Chad Stockslager - Strings, Vocals, Organ, Piano; David Pierce - Trombone; Jess Barr - Guitar; Joe Cripps - Percussion; Keith Killoren - Vocals, Bass; Scott Danbom - Violin; Tony Harper - Drums

Thanks Pam, I couldn’t have said it better myself.I am King James because I prayed about it and God showed me some things. I got saved reading the Living bible and I do believe that other versions (contain) portions of the word of God. However, that is changing rapidly. Variations of words do not change inspiration. Anyone knows that there is a number of ways to say the same thing. The issue with new versions for me is:1. Once you have two versions, authority is broken. That’s why everyone around here keeps saying “yea hath God said.” Can you imagine having two versions of the articles of faith, or two versions your union contract, or any thing that needed to be decisive and authoritative?2. By their fruits ye shall know them. Since the printing of the NIV the Church has taken a dive.3. Anyone knows the KJV is the model.4. There are enough versions to determine that the English language is going out of date twice a year for the last 100 years. This is not the Holy Spirit.5. New version introduce Catholic readings that were available at the translating of the KJV, even though Codex Siniaticus was not found until 1844 having been obviously tampered with and tossed in the trash.6. If you don’t stand for something; you will fall for anything.7. If all versions are equal, I pick the KJV.8. My King James has no copy write. It belongs to the people.9. It is the easiest to read and understand.10. It has never been proved to have errors. This is not true of modern translations. I could go on to 1,000 easily. But people love a new thing!I only bring up the issue as it pertains to the topic being discussed, even though I know that it is at the heart of all apostasy. There are good hearted Christians out there fighting heresy that do not see the problem, they will some day.Steve
Here’s my two cents on Eastern Market/Cap Hill… Breakfast: 1. Peregrine Espresso (Seriously, best coffee I have ever had in my life. Not kidding. Also, only two bucks a cup, and good muffins to boot.) 2. Cafeterias in the House/Senate office buildings (You never know who you might run into.) Lunch: 1. Tortilla Cafe (Best Salvadorian/Mexican food in the District, and at only about $6-7/dish. Also featured on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. Get the Paupusas.) 2. Matchbox (better than Chinatown’s…) 3. Good Stuff Eatery (Burger place started by Top Chef star Spike Mendelson. Delicious.) Happy Hour: 1. Hawk n’ Dove (Hill staffers, et, al) 2. Tune Inn (featured on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives… definitely a dive) 3. Hamilton’s ($1 PBR cans on Fridays… I’m just sayin’) Dinner: 1. Johnny’s Half Shell (Awesome seafood and not *too* expensive.) 2. La Lomita (A bit of a hike down to Penn and 13th, but it’s always a raucous time. I saw John Boehner there the other night. Don’t let that turn you away.)
