Blue Hole of Castalia Ohio explained?
can anybody tell me what the scientific facts on the blue hole is? like the depth mineral makeup or it's origin? i was just informed about it by my girlfriend. i hear it's privately owned and hasn't been available for viewing for some time. i hear you can see the blue sky reflection even if it's dark. anyway i was just curious. thanks
The Blue Hole
A natural phenomenon and one of Ohio's favorite tourist attractions over the years has been "The Blue Hole."
It is situated five miles southwest of Sandusky in Castalia, a town that was laid out in 1836 and took its name from that of a Grecian fountain.
The hole is a spring, the size of a pond, that is fed by subterranean waters flowing upward from deep limestone orifices in the earth. It gushes forth 7,519 gallons of water per minute -- enough to supply the needs of a city of 75,000. It spawns Cold Creek, which then runs swiftly northward descending 57 feet into Sandusky Bay.
Originally the stream flowed into lowlands and a quagmire. It was channeled into a millrace when the first grist mill was built in the area in 1810.
There are several fishing clubs along the stream that keep it well stocked with rainbow and brown trout. The water is without oxygen and thus has to be aerated by waterwheels to sustain the fish.
One can see 50 to 60 feet down into the Blue Hole, but divers have never been able to locate the bottom. The water contains lime, soda, magnesia and iron, and has a blue color. It encrusts all vegetable matter, such as mosses and tree stumps that become immersed in it.
Floods and drought do not have any effect upon the Blue Hole. Temperature of the water is a constant 48 degrees year round, and this prevents the formation of ice in Lake Erie where the stream enters it.
There is more than one "Blue Hole." There are actually seven of these "holes" in that area of Castalia, only one of which is open for viewing to the public. There is no charge. It lacks the magic of its more famous brother, but it is something you must see, if only once. The "blue hole" is a pond about 75 feet in diameter. Looking into it, it is shaped like a funnel. The sides are very steep, with the deepest part (and a hole) in the center.
The lack of oxygen, wildlife, and noticeable current keep the water crystal clear. The trees block the wind, so the surface stays smooth as glass. The reason it appears to have no bottom is the water will play tricks on your eyes, just like looking though a large convex magnifying glass. The water bends the light rays just like glass.
It is fed from an underwater stream. It lacks the oxygen needed to sustain life so plants and fish are unable to live in it. It has a strange "slime" that grows on the bottom/sides instead of algae. Because it is fed from underneath, it becomes the origin of a stream. As the water flows from the "pond" and flows through rapids and is churned by the rocks in the stream, it mixes air/oxygen into the water and becomes fresh, clean water perfect for fish and plants -- one reason these streams are used by the state as hatcheries. This "hole" that is open to the public is also a fascinating place to observe the hatching taking place.
